Fromm’s “Fight gridlock: Freeze immigration.” Message Now on Mississauga Buses

PORT CREDIT, September 30.  Paul Fromm, candidate for Mayor of Mississauga, renewed his call for a five year halt to all immigration to help deal with the growing problem of traffic gridlock.

And, he’s broadcasting his message on a number of signs on Mississauga Transit buses. His sign reads: “FROMM, Mayor, Mississauga: ‘Fight gridlock: Freeze immigration.’”

“Mississauga is part of the GTA mess created by irresponsible politicians at the federal level who stuffed this area with more than 2.5-million immigrants in the past 20 years,” he charges. “However, they never built the infrastructure of roads to move these people. Result: growing traffic gridlock,” he says. “We have much the same network of roads we had 20 years ago.”

Fromm cites the fact that traffic gridlock and transportation were the most important issues for the City of Mississauga, according to a survey of local residents in 2006.

Mississauga’s gridlock woes are tied to those of the GTA and Toronto, Mr. Fromnm notes. “This past spring,” he explains, “the Toronto Board of Trade commissioned a survey found that, of 19 cities, Toronto’s commuting time is the longest – an average 80 minutes round trip  – longer even than legendary gridlocked US cities like Los Angeles (66).”

“The key factor here,” says Fromm, “is massive population increase through immigration. Peel Region is targeted to receive 300,000 more newcomers in the next six years.”

“We need a five year moratorium on immigration intake. No reflection on the present immigrant population, but we need a breather,” Fromm adds.
